Boxing Day reportedly has its advent in the UK about 800 years ago, during the Middle Ages. It was the day when the alms box and collection boxes for the poor, often kept in churches, were traditionally opened so that the contents could be distributed to the less fortunate in society. Some churches still open these boxes on Boxing Day.

You will need:
- Newspaper
- Glue
- Cardboard
- Paint
- Pencils
- Paint Brushes
- Ruler
- Cake Container
- Chopsticks
- Ribbon
- Shrink Wrap
Instructions:
- Cut a sheet of newspaper into 4 vertical parts.
- Paint sheets of newspaper any colour and let dry.
- When dry, place chopstick at the edge of newspaper and roll into a thin paper tube. Glue end to secure and let dry. Make as many of these as necessary.
- Use cake container to trace the circular outline onto cardboard.
- Divide the circle into eights equally with ruler and pencil. Outline circle with a square. Draw parallel lines to touch the sides of the square, whilst touching the edges of the circle. It should form 4 small triangles within your square.
- Cut around the shape to form a cardboard octagon shape.
- Use cardboard octagon cut out as a template to cut out 2 more octagons, one on cardboard, the other on construction paper. Draw one cut-out two inches larger than the first two and cut out on construction paper.
- When paper tubes are dry, place a dot of glue on pie section and place paper tube onto the glue. Glue another paper tube on top of the other paper tube
- Glue the other cardboard octagon cut-out flat onto the top of the tubes. Let dry. This forms the base of your basket.
- When dry, glue larger construction paper octagon cut out to the bottom of the base. Fold excess paper to the top and secure with glue.
- Glue smaller construction paper octagon cut-out to the top of your base.
- Fold paper tube across the next paper tube along the octagon shaped base, and so on, until you’re back at the start.
- Use Cake container to shape your basket. Continue to wrap paper tubes around your container. Glue extra paper tubes to the tip of your paper tubes to wrap around your cake container completely. Let dry.
- Be creative with your choice of handles for the basket. This is optional.
- Place donation items into the basket and wrap with shrink wrap.
- Tie shrink wrap around the basket with ribbon.
- Give basket to a person in need! 😊
