Environmental Sustainability with Flying Tree Environmental Management

Environmental sustainability is the concept of adopting practices that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Plastic pollution, pollution caused by humans, has become a worldwide problem and it will continue to hurt our planet more every day if we don’t act soon. The protection of natural resources and reducing our carbon foot print are just two ways that we can help to save our planet.

Environmental sustainability is important to all of us, here are a few reasons why:

  • If humans don’t take care of the planet, no one will
  • Protecting natural resources means improving human life; and
  • The rate of harvest for renewable resources should not exceed the regeneration rate.

In recent years we have all seen the effect global warming has had on our planet. This is where environmental sustainability comes in. We need to take action now, before it’s too late and irreversible damage has been done to the earth.

Flying Tree Environmental Management is dedicated to reforestation and rehabilitation of endangered and sensitive ecosystems. Through their many initiatives which integrate ecosystem rehabilitation, waste management and community education and engagement activities; they are meeting sustainable development goals for Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and Latin America.

They’re involved in:

Flying Tree uses paragliding and powered paragliding on its aerial reforestation process. They also use power boats, kite-surf, stand-up-paddle board and kayaks for wetland reforestation.

Their headquarters is located in the Manzanilla Beach/Nariva Swamp, Trinidad and Tobago. This is where they conduct most of their research and create the adequate techniques to be applied toward their cause. Flying tree also host seminars and training sessions for interested parties, and provide paragliding eco tours as well.

Flying Tree also employs the technique of plastic sequestrating and upcycling. This is the process of transforming plastic waste collected from landfill sites or it can be collected from the streets and recycling centres, into a useable product. It’s a method of transforming the collected plastics into a higher value product.

The Flying Tree processes the plastics, Styrofoam and expanded PVC collected during their river, beach and underwater clean-up activities. Plastic chips are created and then sequestered in concrete to create solid, functional items such as benches, pavers and plant pots. Their benches can be found in several schools and their pavers were used in the Emperor Valley Zoo.

As part of their international reach, the Flying Tree team takes part in different sports events and competitions globally where they create awareness, teach techniques and recruit suitable environmentalist.
