It’s World Wildlife Day on March 3. It is an international holiday recognized by the United Nations to honor all wild animals and plants and the positive impact they have on both our quality of life and the health of the planet.
This day was picked because it commemorates the 1973 signing of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. On this World Wildlife Day, CITES is also being honored as it turns 50. The theme of this year’s World Wildlife Day is “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation” in honor of the work that CITES does and the cooperative conservation work that is being done globally.
The following are 5 simple community service projects for World Wildlife Day.
- Plant a neighborhood garden: Construct a neighborhood garden using native plants that draw pollinators and other wildlife. To plant and maintain the garden, collaborate with neighborhood volunteers.
- Organize a cleanup event for a local park or nature reserve to get rid of trash and other items that could endanger wildlife. To make the event a success, collaborate with neighborhood groups and volunteers.
- Organize a photography competition that celebrates the beauty of the wildlife in your area. Photo submissions of various species and habitats are encouraged by participants.

- Start a recycling program: Start a community-wide recycling program to reduce waste and protect wildlife habitats. Partner with local businesses and organizations to make the program a success.
