UWI makes connections in Nigeria

Great news for students at the University of West Indies (UWI)! Students will be able to enrol to read for a Master’s Degree in African and Global studies starting from the 2017/2018 academic year. The proposed degree is to be awarded by the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies which was established through a joint effort of UWI and The University of Lagos (UNILAG) in Nigeria.

According to a press release by UWI, the newly formed institution will promote the exchange of cultural ideas as well as social research that will help to further develop Africa and the diasporic community.

The degree will address development issues that pertain to Nigeria, Africa, African Diaspora and the Caribbean. The institute will be based in both universities and will run academic and research-based programs. Areas of focus will include African democracy, reparations for slavery, poverty, cultural and national advancements and global togetherness in critical issues.

The MOU was signed at UWI on Wednesday and the UWI Vice-Chancellor Prof Sir Hilary Beckles has lauded the initiative, hoping that it will achieve its goal of bridging the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and the African diaspora.
