Things to Do in August Before School Starts Back

The July/August vacation always goes by in a blink. And before you know it, it’s time to hunt for booklists, hem uniforms, and reset those early morning alarms. But there’s still time to squeeze in a few more memories before the school bell rings again.
If you’re looking for things to do this August, here’s a laid-back list full of real ideas to enjoy with the fam or solo:

Visit the National Museum
It’s air-conditioned (win), free (double win) and actually pretty cool when you give it a chance. From natural history to cultural displays, it’s a great way to explore Trinidad’s past in a calm, educational setting.

Take the Kids to the Zoo
The Emperor Valley Zoo is a classic. It’s always a hit with younger children and is an easy way to spend a few hours. Pro tip: go early before the heat kicks in.

Pack a Picnic
Whether it’s Botanical Gardens in Port of Spain or San Fernando Hill in the south, a simple picnic with homemade bakes, fruits and juice can feel like a full day out. Lay on the grass, play a few games and take in the view.

Hop Over to Tobago
Even if it’s just for the day. Grab the ferry, eat crab and dumpling in Store Bay, or find a quiet spot in Charlotteville. Sometimes a quick change of pace is all you need.

Head to the Beach
Not feeling the Maracas crowd? No problem. Try ManzanillaLas CuevasCedros or Toco for a more peaceful dip. Bring your cooler, a good playlist and enjoy the breeze.

Take a Walk in the Bamboo Cathedral
It’s calm, beautiful, and the perfect place to reset your mind before jumping back into routines. Early mornings are best—less sun, more peace.

Do a Quick Staycation

Not every trip needs a passport. Book a weekend stay at a local guesthouse or Airbnb. Head down south, explore Mayaro, or spend the night in Tobago. A change of scenery, even just for a night or two, can feel like a full reset.
Explore the Pitch Lake
If you’ve never been, this is your sign. It’s one of the largest natural asphalt lakes in the world, and it’s right in La Brea. Go with a guide, soak in a sulphur pond nearby, and feel like a tourist in your own country.

Go on a Food Run
The Queen’s Park SavannahEddie Hart Grounds, and Food Square are all bursting with good eats. From souse to corn soup and BBQ, you’re bound to find a craving you didn’t even know you had.
Or if you’re feeling adventurous, check out Ravi Persad Doubles in Carlton Centre or Princes Town. Doubles with meat? Yes please.

Start a Family Reading Challenge

Ease back into the school mindset with a fun twist. Pick a few books and challenge everyone in the family to finish at least one before school starts. You can even tie in a reward for the best reader or most books finished.

Have a “Yes Day” at Home
This is a fun one – within reason, of course. Let the kids pick meals, activities and even your outfit for the day. It’s a simple way to close out the holidays with laughs, silliness, and connection.

Mix Fun with Prep at Charran’s Chaguanas
We all know it’s back-to-school season. If you need to get things sorted, Charran’s Chaguanas is the spot for uniforms, books, lunch kits, stationery and more. One stop, no stress. You might even find a few deals while you’re at it.

Make the Most of the Time Left
The best part of vacation isn’t always the big trips or fancy outings. It’s the laughs in the car, the sunsets at the beach, the little discoveries in your own neighbourhood.
Take it easy, enjoy your time, and make a few more sweet memories before the school shoes come out the box.
