What Your Security Company Is Not Telling You

With news and social media posts constantly warning us of the dangers around us, many people are taking steps to ensure their safety and that of their families. When it comes to home security, it’s worthwhile to invest some time in finding out what is available to you on the market and allocating a decent budget. Here are some things that your security company may not be telling you.

Your home security system should do more than a mere alarm

There are major differences between a burglar alarm and a home security system; the latter provides additional benefits to help protect you and your family, and it may be the better investment. A burglar alarm is the traditional type of alarm system that has sensors on doors and windows. It will alert you that an intruder has entered into your home. This is extremely beneficial, but a home security system can also warn you about environmental dangers such as fire and carbon monoxide, allow you to see and speak with loved ones, lock and unlock doors and alert you of movement or sound. Before signing up with a company, it is important that you know what you are getting, what is protected and how the system works.

Systems are improving

A new phone is released every few week, new televisions every few months. The same is true for security systems. They are getting better? Did you know that it is possible to arm or disarm your security system for your home or business right from your smartphone? And some modern systems often take into consideration all kinds of home safety, not just those related to illegal activity.  A software-supported security system can send you a text message every time a door or window is opened, whether you’ve armed it or not. It can also stream live video or send still images of what’s happening in your garage, living room, backyard, or wherever you deploy a security camera.

You’re not getting what you pay for

Some security companies in Trinidad and Tobago claim to offer round-the-clock protection for your home. This sounds appealing to home owners needing to feel more secure and many opt in. However, what these companies actually offer is a security patrol service at staggered hours of the day or night. Persons with malicious intentions need only wait until the security vehicle has left to carry out their plans. What you need is a 24/7 remote monitoring service connected to your home security system that alerts you of an emergency and/or sends assistance when needed.

One size does not fit all

Although some security companies may tell you there is only one kind of security system for everyone, this is not true. An effective security system is one that is customized according to the size of your property, the number of floors and the number of possible entry points.  A small system might be fine for an apartment or small home. If you have a larger home, you’ll need a system that caters to that as well. You will be very upset if in an attempt to save a few dollars, a burglar finds an unsecured entry into your home. Consider what is at steak and invest in security that gives you peace of mind.

Cameras do not equal security

Savvy criminals are doing more to cover their tracks after an intrusion, even removing or destroying DVR systems. Ideally, the footage from your security cameras should always be retrievable and indestructible. The bigger issue is this: cameras do not constitute a complete security system. They can neither detect or alert you of a security breach. What good are cameras if you arrive home to find that it was still broken into while you were away? Consider a security system supported by an app that detects intrusion, sends a notification to your mobile device, streams live video from your cameras and allows you to take the necessary action. Security cameras, therefore, should make up part of an intelligent, fully integrated alarm system.
